In this webinar, Rebecca Parlakian, MA Ed, from ZERO TO THREE will share some of the seminal and emerging research exploring the impact fathers have on their children, and the ways in which fatherhood impacts men as well. Next, Dr. Alan-Michael Graves of the Good+Foundation will discuss the critical success factors for powerful and authentic fatherhood engagement at the community level. Finally, we will explore the systemic obstacles that many fathers face as they work to coparent their children. Bring your experiences, questions and struggles as we explore pathways to fatherhood support and engagement. Learning objectives for this session are:  

  1. Explain common barriers preventing fathers from participating in program services on behalf of their child(ren).
  2. Describe the ways in which father involvement shapes children's development and outcomes. 
  3. Apply recommended practices in father engagement to a plan appropriate for participant's setting/community.

Dr. Alan-Michael Graves has worked in the human services field with extensive experience as a manager and administrator for both public and private agencies for the past 15 years. He has brought these diverse perspectives to his work helping agencies develop, implement and evaluate interagency systems of care, family partnerships and community programming. Prior to joining Good+, Alan-Michael served as the Director of Project Fatherhood in the Leadership Center at Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII), focusing on a broad range of multidisciplinary activities from research and program development to training and advocacy for policy change. Alan-Michael received his bachelor’s in political science and his master’s in public administration from California State University and his doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA.

As Senior Director at ZERO TO THREE, Rebecca Parlakian leads a project portfolio on child development, parenting, and high quality teaching. She has co-authored five curricula, including the Early Connections parent cafe© curriculum and Problem Solvers, an early math curriculum. Rebecca holds a Master's degree in infant/toddler special education from the George Washington University.
