This eLearning course is a foundation for new HealthySteps Specialists. The four modules introduce: the HealthySteps model and approach, the role of the HealthySteps Specialist, and foundational knowledge and skills you will use in your role of meeting the needs of the infants, toddlers, and families in your community. The four eLearning modules are:

  • HealthySteps Foundations I: Overview: This 60-minute module introduces the HealthySteps model, the research behind it, the eight Core Components, and our tiered approach to supporting families of children ages 0-3. You will learn the opportunities and vulnerabilities of the first three years of life which provides the rationale for HealthySteps’ focus on this population. We will share evidence of the effectiveness of the HealthySteps model, including positive outcomes for children, caregivers, and pediatric practices. Finally, you will learn about supports and resources available to you from the HealthySteps National Office as you continue your journey as a HealthySteps Specialist.
  • HealthySteps Foundations II: Guiding Principles for HealthySteps Specialists: This 45-minute module introduces the three core principles that guide your critical work as a HealthySteps Specialist: mindfulness, reflection, and parallel process. This learning experience offers you the opportunity to:
    • Consider the value and impact of each guiding principle when working with families in your capacity as a HealthySteps Specialist.
    • Explore examples of clinic situations that would benefit from the application of these principles.
    • Gain concrete ideas for infusing these principles into your own practice.
  • HealthySteps Foundations III: Three Perspectives in the Room: This 60-minute module explores the three perspectives that influence every visit you have with each family. This learning experience offers you the opportunity to explore:
    • Factors that shape the perspective of the HealthySteps Specialist: expertise in early development and learning, knowledge of trauma-informed care, cultural relevance and diversity-informed practice, and professional responsibilities.
    • Factors that shape the perspective of the baby: individual development, approaches to learning, and temperament.
    • Factors that shape the perspective of the caregiver: knowledge of their baby, significant family relationships, their self-perception, and their mental health.
  • HealthySteps Foundations IV: Strategies for Working with Caregivers: This 45-minute module focuses on four practical strategies for supporting and partnering with caregivers to provide the best care for their young children. These approaches build caregivers’ confidence, knowledge, skills, and resources for their parenting journey. This learning experience offers you the opportunity to:
    • Consider the benefit of viewing the caregiver and child dyad (or triad) as the patient in the HealthySteps model.
    • Identify common misperceptions caregivers have about children’s development and address them in both proactive and responsive ways.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the HealthySteps model and why it supports infants, toddlers and their caregivers.
  2. Identify and apply three principles that guide the work of the HealthySteps Specialist.
  3. Identify factors that shape the perspectives of the child, the caregiver, and the HealthySteps Specialist during a well-child visit.
  4. Describe effective strategies for working with caregivers using the HealthySteps approach.
